Taxes

Do-It-Yourself Fact-Checking

An absolute must read!

Taxes are back in the news. Barack Obama promises to raise them, but only on people making more than $250,000, or maybe $200,000, or maybe $150,000. But really, he's going to cut them for 95% of us. Trust him. He's not going to cut them for the super-rich, and only the super-rich, like George W. Bush did.

Obama's Four Tax Increases for People Earning Under $250K

I've worked as the state level media and strategy director on three Presidential election campaigns -- I know how "promises" work -- so I analyzed Senator Obama's promises by looking for loopholes. The first loophole was easy to find: Senator Obama doesn't "count" allowing the Bush tax cuts to lapse as a tax increase.

Thank You Verizon Wireless [Praise]!

Dear Consumerist-

This last month I went over my monthly airtime allowance (700 minutes) for my cellphone plan. I e-mailed Verizon Wireless to ask them if they had more accurate usage information available than what was posted under "My Account" on their website. This is the e-mail I received back:

In review of your account, I found that your current airtime usage estimate is 723 peak minutes of use between the two lines on your Family SharePlan. Please keep in mind that this is an estimate and not an exact airtime usage amount. Some airtime may take up to 90 days to be reported and billed, thus you may see an increase in your current airtime estimates within the next few days.

You are a valued customer and we appreciate your business. In an effort to provide stellar customer service, I have added 100 Bonus minutes to each of the lines on your account for the next three months at no additional charge. This additional airtime will expire on April 23, 2008. Hopefully this bonus airtime will prevent potential overage charges on your next billing statement provided you do not exceed your allowance of 900 minutes.

I just thought Verizon Wireless should receive a little praise. This isn't the first time that they have bailed me out.

Thanks,
Scott T.

This Sunday is going to be big in Green Bay as the Packers are in the NFC Championship game after one of the best seasons in team history. If you're like me, you love football in high definition. Unfortunately, if you live in the WLUK market you will not be receiving the game in HD over cable.
